This essential release includes Arethaâs third album, "The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin", originally released by Columbia in 1962. Producer Robert Mersey dipped into a jazz bag on the opening cut. Franklin still didnât have all of the skills in her arsenal to turn a song like âJust for a Thrillâ upside down, as she would âI Say a Little Prayer,â âRespectâ or âLet It Beâ in later years. Despite her distinctive voice, perhaps some of the other ingredients just werenât in place yet, but that doesnât make these recordings any less worthwhile."
In addition to the original masterpiece, this collectorâs edition includes 4 bonus tracks from the same period: the touching âTrouble in Mind,â the soulful Ray Charles number âHard Times (No One Knows Better Than I),â the endearing âItâs So Heartbreakinâ,â and the dance-floor stomper âRough Lover.
Recorded in New York, between April 27 and May 11, 1962.
