Theirs was the sweet but streetwise sound of R&B suffused with gospel influences, singing high-spirited songs with sunny harmonies, as well as ballads and rocking numbers. The great material The Drifters recorded came from a variety of sources, including the legendary songwriting teams of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller; Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman; and Gerry Goffin and Carole King.This quintessential edition includes The Drifters’ two finest albums, originally released by the Atlantic label: Rockin’ & Driftin’ (1959), and the first LP appearance by the Ben E. King-era Drifters, Save The Last Dance For Me (1962). Both albums consist of selections of previous Atlantic singles, some of them dating back as far as 1955.
