This release presents the complete original LP The Lester Young-Buddy Rich Trio (Verve MGV-8164). It consists of an amazing trio set by the two title artists plus the incomparable Nat “King” Cole on the piano (he was signed to another record label at the time, so he appeared on the LP under the pseudonym of “Aye Guy”). The only existing alternate take produced at the session has been added as a bonus, as well as two further sessions in their entirety which complete Young’s recordings with Nat King Cole (the AFRS Jubilee show also features Buddy Rich on drums). To round out the set, two Jazz at the Philharmonic performances from the same period featuring both Young and Rich plus a plethora of great stars.PERSONNEL:LESTER YOUNG, tenor saxNAT “KING” COLE, pianoBuDDY RICH, drumsLos Angeles, March-April, 1946.[10-17] Bonus Tracks :(10-13): Lester Young (ts), Nat “King” Cole (p), Red Callender (b).Los Angeles, July 15, 1942 (recorded for the Philo label).(14-15): Lester Young (ts), Nat “King” Cole (p), Oscar Moore (el-g),Johnny Miller (b), Buddy Rich (d).AFRS Jubilee #184, Hollywood, March 20, 1946.(16-17): Lester Young (ts & vcl), Coleman Hawkins, Corky Corcoran,Babe Russin (ts), Willie Smith (as), Buck Clayton, Ray Linn (tp),Kenny Kersey (p), Irving Ashby (g), Billy Hadnott (b), Buddy Rich (d).Embassy Auditorium, Los Angeles, April 22, 1946.INCLUDES 12-PAGE BOOKLETTRACKS:01 Back To The Land02 I’ve Found A New Baby03 I Cover The Waterfront04 Somebody Loves Me05 I Want To Be Happy06 The Man I Love07 Mean To Me08 Peg O’ My Heart09 I Cover The Waterfront [Alternate Take]10 Indiana11 I Can’t Get Started12 Tea For Two13 Body And Soul14 These Foolish Things15 Lester Leaps In16 Bugle Call Rag17 I’ve Found A New BabyTotal Time: 77:03
