On Richard’s raucous early singles such as “Ready Teddy”, “Slippin’ and Slidin’”, “Jenny Jenny”, “Rip It Up”, and “Long Tall Sally” his boogiewoogie piano and falsetto scream ignited the unfettered possibilities of rock & roll. “Tutti Frutti” still has the most inspired rock lyric on record: “A wop bop alu bop, a wop bam boom!”The sheer exuberance, ferocious urgency, and joyous passion of all of the singer’s moans, screams, yelps, shouts, whoops, and impromptu interjections come alive with high-voltage detail and colorful immediacy.
