2-CD SETINCLUDES 11 BONUS TRACKSThis release presents the complete original albums "Jazz at the Plaza vols. 1 & 2" (Columbia C-32470 & C-32471), which contained the musical results of a party thrown by Columbia to celebrate the healthy state of their jazz division. As stated on the original liner notes by producer Irving Townsend: “It was a party. We taped it because we wanted to remember it, in case it never happened again.” The event brought together the talents of the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans), the Duke Ellington Orchestra (showcasing the singing of Jimmy Rushing on afew songs), and Billie Holiday, who performed two tracks. As a bonus to this unique concert, two rare live broadcasts of the Miles Davis Sextet from the same period (at the end of CD 1) have been included , as well as additional live performances by the Ellington band taped in Paris shortly after the Plaza concert (closing CD 2).All tracks recorded live at the Persian Room of the Plaza Hotel,New York, Tuesday, September 9, 1958.PERSONNEL:On CD 1 [1-4]: THE MILES DAVIS SEXTETMILES DAVIS trumpetJOHN COLTRANE tenor saxCANNONBALL ADDERLEY alto saxBILL EVANS pianoPAUL CHAMBERS bassJIMMY COBB drums. On CD 2 [1-5] & [7]: DUKE ELLINGTON & HIS ORCHESTRAClark Terry, Harold “Shorty” Baker, Cat Anderson (tp), Ray Nance (tp, vln),Quentin Jackson, Britt Woodman, John Sanders (tb), Jimmy Hamilton (cl,ts),Russell Procope (as, cl), Johnny Hodges (as), Paul Gonsalves (ts),Harry Carney (bar, b-cl, cl), Duke Ellington (p), Jimmy Woode (b),Sam Woodyard (d), Jimmy Rushing (vcl on 5 only). On CD 2 [6]:BILLIE HOLIDAY vocalsBUCK CLAYTON trumpetMAL WALDRON piano.Unknown bass & drums.(*) BONUS TRACKS:CD 1 [5-9]: THE MILES DAVIS SEXTET (Same personnel as above except Red Garland (p) replaces Bill Evans.Live at the Spotlight Lounge, Washington D.C., November 1, 1958 (tracks 5-7)& at Birdland, New York, January 3, 1959 (tracks 8-9).CD 2 [8-13]: DUKE ELLINGTON & HIS ORCHESTRA(same personnel as CD 2, 1-5 & 7 except Jimmy Rushing omitted).Live at Salle Pleyel, Paris, France, November 20, 1958.INCLUDES 20-PAGE BOOKLETCD 1: TOTAL TIME: 77:4201 If I Were A Bell02 Oleo03 My Funny Valentine04 Straight, No Chaser / The Theme05 Sid’s Ahead (*)06 Bye Bye Blackbird (*)07 Straight, No Chaser #2 (*)08 Bags’ Groove (*)09 All Of You (*)CD 2: TOTAL TIME: 77:5701 TOOT SUITE [JAZZ FESTIVal Suite]: a) Red Garter / b) Red Shoes / c) Red Carpet/ d) Ready Go02 Jones03 El Gato04 All Of Me05 Medley: a) Go Away Blues / b) Hello, Little Girl / c) Love To Hear My Baby Call My Name [Vocals By Jimmy Rushing]06 Medley: When Your Lover Has Gone / Don’t Explain [Vocals By Billie Holiday]07 Take The “A” Train08 El Gato #2 (*)09 Take The “A” Train #2 [Vocals By Ray Nance] (*)10 V.I.P Boogie (*)11 Jam With Sam (*)12 Stompy Jones (*)13 Hi Fi Fo Fum (*)(*) BONUS TRACKS
