Instrumentation was always important to Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996), who was one of the first to exclude the piano from the jazz rhythm section (although he played it sometimes). Mulligan continually experimented with new formats for his music, which was perhaps best exemplified by his work with his Concert Jazz Band.
