Oliver Nelson and Eric Dolphy combined their superb talents on just four albums, all of them recorded in 1960-61. All four LPs are included here in their entirety in chronological order. The albums, all of them true classics, consist of Nelson’s Screamin’ the Blues (Prestige 8243) and The Blues and the Abstract Truth (Impulse AS-5), Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis’ Trane Whistle (Prestige 7206), and Straight Ahead (New Jazz NJLP8255), which showcase both Nelson and Dolphy as co-leaders. The great Roy Haynes is the drummer on all four LPs.OLIVER NELSON, alto sax, tenor sax & clarinetERIC DOLPHY, alto sax, bass clarinet & fluteROY HAYNES, drumsOn all tracks, plus:CD 1, [1-6]: Screamin’ the BluesRichard Williams (tp), Richard Wyands (p), George Duvivier (b).Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, May 27, 1960.[7-12]: Trane WhistleEddie “Lockjaw” Davis (ts), Clark Terry, Richard Williams, Bob Bryant (tp), Melba Liston, Jimmy Cleveland (tb), Jerome Richardson, George Barrow (ts, fl), Bob Ashton (bar), Richard Wyands (p), Wendell Marshall (b).Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, September 20, 1960.CD 2 [1-6]: The Blues and the Abstract TruthFreddie Hubbard (tp), George Barrow (bar), Bill Evans (p), Paul Chambers (b).Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, February 23, 1961.[7-12]: Straight AheadRichard Wyands (p), George Duvivier (b).
