2-CD SET  -  INCLUDES 12 BONUS TRACKSPremiered in 1956, the perennial Broadway musical My Fair Lady was based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story is about Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. This release presents both the complete recording by the original London cast, which premiered the musical in England in 1958 and was recorded in Stereo, and the complete Broadway cast recording, which was taped in Mono in 1956 (the album spent15 weeks at #1 in the charts). The two recordings shared exactly the samepersonnel, with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the lead roles. (Harrison would also star the 1964 film, in which Andrews was replaced by Audrey Hepburn.)A 1956 recording of “The Embassy Waltz”, a Lerner-Loewe tune which wasn’t included on the Broadway cast recording but later appeared in the film version, has been added here as a bonus, along with eleven jazz versions of tunes from the play (vocals at the end of CD1,and instrumentals at the end of CD2).CD 1 [1-16]: Recorded in London, England, February 1, 1959.Original recordings produced by Goddard Lieberson.CD 2 [1-16]: Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, March 24, 1956.Original recordings produced by Goddard Lieberson.(*) Bonus tracks: CD 1 [17-23] & CD 2 [17-21]:Alternative versions of tunes from the show (1956-62)CD1: TOTAL TIME : 72:54THE 1958 STEREO LONDON CAST RECORDING  + vocal bonus tracks01) OVERTURE02) WHY CAN’T THE ENGLISH?03) WOULDN’T IT BE LOVERLY04) WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK05) I’M AN ORDINARY MAN06) JUST YOU WAIT07) THE RAIN IN SPAIN08) I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT09) ASCOT GAVOTTE10) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE 25411) YOU DID IT12) SHOW ME13) GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME14) A HYMN TO HIM15) WITHOUT YOU16) I’VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE17) THE EMBASSY WALTZ [Percy Faith Orchestra] (*)18) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE [Nancy Wilson] (*)19) SHOW ME [Ella Fitzgerald] (*)20) I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT [Frank Sinatra] (*)21) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE [Etta Jones] (*)22) I’VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE [Tony Bennett] (*)23) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE [Mel Tormé] (*)CD 2: TOTAL TIME: 71:20THE 1956 MONO BROADWAY CAST RECORDING + instrumental bonus tracks01) OVERTURE02) WHY CAN’T THE ENGLISH?03) WOULDN’T IT BE LOVERLY04) WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK05) I’M AN ORDINARY MAN06) JUST YOU WAIT07) THE RAIN IN SPAIN08) I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT09) ASCOT GAVOTTE10) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE11) YOU DID IT12) SHOW ME13) GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME14) A HYMN TO HIM15) WITHOUT YOU16) I’VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE17) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE [Erroll Garner] (*)18) GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME [Jonah Jones] (*)19) I’VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE [Sonny Rollins] (*)20) SHOW ME [Chico Hamilton Quintet] (*)21) ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE [Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis] (*)
