Original Down Beat review: The Worldâs Greatest Gospel Singer
âThe subtitle of this album is The Worldâs Greatest Gospel Singer,
reflecting the consensus that Mahalia has indeed no visible challengers.
As George Avakian notes, gospel singing has its roots in the early
Negro spirituals, and the spirituals are one of the foundation sources
of the jazz tradition. Thatâs why Mahaliaâs magnificent album is rated
here. This is one not to be missed.â (Nat Hentoff)
Original Down Beat review: Sunday at Newport Jazz Festival 1958
âLooking back, Miss Jackson emerges as the single truly outstanding star
of Newport â58. In every way, this set is a superior recording. Of all
the volumes recorded at Newport in recent years, this is the one that
stands head and shoulders above the rest.â (Dom Cerulli)
âWhen I was a girl I washed dishes, scrubbed floors, bent over a
wash-tub, just to help keep my family alive. I knew the blues, but
thereâs despair in the blues; I sang Godâs music because it gave me
hope. I still need the hope and happiness Godâs music brings.â Mahalia Jackson
