College jazz concerts have long been a regular occurrence, but in 1953 they were a rarity. It was the Dave Brubeck Quartet that pioneered performing jazz at universities, and the shows featured here mark their first on record. Oberlin, with its famous conservatory, was an appropriate setting, and the quartet came up with a program of five great jazz standards in long and often surprisingly free performances that found Dave and Paul Desmond at the top of their game. Presented here are the complete original LPs Jazz at Oberlin (Fantasy 3-11) and Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond at Wilshire-Ebell (Fantasy 3249), both consisting of live performances taped at the two colleges in 1953.
This edition of the Oberlin concert presents Desmondâs legendary solo on âThe Way You Look Tonightâ in its complete form for the first time on CD!!!
