This release presentes the Jazz Crusadersâ complete live LP At the Lighthouse (Pacific Jazz ST-57). Employing a two-horn front line (trombone and tenor saxophone), the groupâs sound was rooted in hard bop, with an emphasis on R&B and soul. They would shorten their name to âThe Crusadersâ in 1971, when they decided to adopt a jazzfunk style. This set is unique among the groupâs recordings because of the presence of bassist Victor Gaskin, who replaced The Crusadersâ first bassist, Jimmy Bond. Two songs from the same engagement not present on the original LP (âPenny Blueâ and âBoopieâ), as well as three tracks from a later session also featuring Gaskin have been added here as a bonus.
Live at the Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, California, August 5, 1962.
