    This release contains the complete original album Black Pearls (Prestige LP7316), by the John Coltrane Quintet with Red Garland on piano and Donald Byrd on trumpet. This was the last LP made by this formation, which had previously recorded two extended sessions that produced the material for a number of albums. A Coltrane-Garland quintet/quartet session, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet instead of Donald Byrd on three tracks, has been added as a bonus.
