In
July of 1960, Max Roach and Charles Mingus â in search of fair
treatment for African-American performers â organized a ârebel festivalâ
to coincide with the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. Roachâs
celebrated LP, We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (Candid CJM8002),
with lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr., is fuelled by the energy of the civil
rights movement. The ambiance of rebellion, coupled with the increasing
development of the Civil Rights and Black Pride movements, provides the
context for both a brilliant piece of music, and a powerful political
and social statement. Roachâs complete LP Deeds, Not Words (Riverside Records â RLP 1122) has been added here as a bonus.
